Never have I ever...sewn a pair of pants

Never had I ever…made my own pants! As I write this, I am wearing one of the four that I have made since I started. Four! Seriously, I can’t stop making them either.

Sewing my own pants legit freaked me out: hemming the pants to be even, worrying about crotch size, matching pockets, etc. I picked a pattern that I had seen around the inter-web and that looked fairly easy. No zippers, no outer pockets and no blind hem.

I read posts on Instagram to see what type of material people were using and where they purchased it from. French terry or knit seemed to be the winners when it came to softness. While I love some soft joggers, I haven’t sewn much with knits. I figured, if I’m jumping in to pants, why not tack on sewing with knits too!

I don’t want to spoil the story but let’s start with things that I learned while sewing this pattern with knits.

1.       When sewing with knits, finding which way the stretch goes is super important. I say this not in a teacher type of way but imagine it coming out in a sarcastic, rolling my eyes with my palm slapped against my  forehead sort of way! Ugh! I totally didn’t pay attention to the stretch!

2.       When placing a waistband on that has button holes for a drawstring, make sure those are facing the correct direction before you painstakingly sew the thing on the pants. Enter seam ripper!

3.       When sewing the legs together in the crotch….well, let’s just say that on my first pair of these joggers I was more excited about sewing them than actually reading the darn instructions.

Pocket detail from an upcycled sweatshirt from Goodwill.

Once I ran through the pattern and actually read the instructions, I realized just how easy the whole process was. I went directly to my favorite fabric store and bought more knit fabric to make more.

The knit wasn’t even that nerve racking, once I figured out the stretch direction. My serger and I became great friends and I serged each side before sewing the seams together.

The pockets? So fun to sew the contrasting detail on.

The waistband? Super cool to get the scrunchie look.

The finished pants? I love all of them and live in them everyday after 6pm at home.
