I have been challenging myself with choosing patterns that I wouldn’t dream of making...like a jumpsuit...with an invisible zipper...and hemmed pant legs. Nothing like killing three birds with one stone!
Never had I ever…made my own pants! As I write this, I am wearing one of the four that I have made since I started. Four! Seriously, I can’t stop making them either.
I am one of those people who is always cold. Even in the hottest part of the summer, if I am inside with the air conditioning then I will be in slippers and a sweatshirt or under a blanket. Anytime I scroll through social media, I take full notice if I see something warm and cozy. I am not sure who’s post I originally saw Joe’s Toes slippers on, but within minutes I was on their website buying a colorful DIY slipper kit!
I am usually horrible about finding the time to take pictures of my handmade wares. I resort to finding some uncluttered section of our house or an area of greenery in the yard that doesn’t have weeds. With our upcoming beach vacation, a lightbulb went off in my head – take the darn pictures at the beach! I packed up all of my recent “me made” items and had my oldest kiddo take pictures before we went into dinner each night. Enjoy these Me Made Vacation garments!
It’s comical how I react when people find out that I sew and then ask me to hem something. I can only sew what I know and in all honestly, in the world of sewing, my knowledge is very limited. This year, one of my goals is to broaden my horizons and learn more and different sewing techniques.
I love the summer and being in the sun! My kids love to swim and walk on the beach. When we do these fun in the sun activities, I am never sure what to use to cover up. I don’t like pulling on pants over my swim suit and I feel the swim suit poking out when I wear a dress. I wanted to buy something that looks specifically like a swim suit cover up. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find anything that I really liked. Most of them were really gauzing feeling and that makes me feel itchy. Many of them were dark in color and when I am in the sun I don’t really want something black covering me. So, this led me to searching for the consistency and color fabric that I wanted and get creative on making my own.
With everything that I use in sewing, sometimes I need a container to store smaller items that can get lost in the shuffle of things. Things like rotary replacement blades, clothing tag fasteners, safety pins, etc. But as I searched the store shelves to find something that might fit that need, everything looked so…plastic. I wanted something to fit in with all that surrounded me. Fabric!
At the beginning of the year, I saw many fabulous ladies on Instagram posting what garments they were going to sew in 2018. I have been sewing for years but have never really taken the plunge to sew anything more for myself than pj pants or shorts. There was a common theme that I saw being posted on everyone’s “need to sew” list and that was the Ogden Cami by True Bias.
I attended Midwest Craft Con this past weekend and the organizers scheduled some DIY sessions for us to attend. Whether they wanted us to actually learn a new craft or just give us a brain break from learning, I am thankful. I learned to macramé a hanging for my sewing room wall. I painted a bangle bracelet with a Craft Away Camp. And I learned to Shibori Dye fabric.
In the past I have always used a dry erase board, which are great, but after years of using the same one I notice that it looks messy. A few times I accidentally used a sharpie. Some months I didn’t erase some words and now those letters are horrid to get removed. And I notice that in certain spots, the pretty shine is no longer there. Time for a new board! But wait…can I make one?
